– Serving Brooklyn NY

Since Positive Pest Management has both employees and clients in Brooklyn, we have learned quite a bit about the area and are well able to service clients for pest control throughout the Borough. In addition we are quite fond of the area’s history….

The history of Brooklyn spans more than 350 years. The settlement began in the 17th century as the small Dutch-founded town of “Breuckelen” on the East River shore of Long Island, and grew to be a sizable city in the 19th century, and was consolidated in 1898 joining the largest city in the nation (Manhattan) with the fourth-largest (Brooklyn) and throwing in Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx for good measure.

Brooklyn is the most populous of New York City’s five boroughs, with about 2.6 million people and has the same boundaries as Kings County; the largest in New York State. Since consolidation with New York City in 1898, Brooklyn has been governed by the New York City Charter that provides for a strong mayor-council system where each Borough has active representation.

The centralized New York City government is responsible for public education, correctional institutions, libraries, public safety, recreational facilities, sanitation, water supply, and welfare services.

With the restoration of run-down urban areas by the middle class, many of Brooklyn’s neighborhoods are becoming increasingly mixed ethnically, with an influx of immigrants integrating its neighborhoods.

Brooklyn contains dozens of distinct neighborhoods, representing many of the major ethnic groups found within the New York City area. The Borough has a high degree of linguistic diversity as its neighborhoods are ever-changing since populations move in and out.

For example, during the early to mid-20th century, Brownsville had a majority of Jewish residents; since the 1970s it has been majority African American. Midwood during the early 20th century was filled with ethnic Irish, then filled with Jewish residents for nearly 50 years, and is slowly becoming a Pakistani enclave. Brooklyn’s most populous racial group, white, declined from 97.2% in 1930 to 46.9% by 1990.

Positive Pest Management is active in the Brooklyn community and we realize that from a cultural perspective, Brooklyn has played a major role in various aspects of American life including literature, cinema and theater. The Brooklyn accent is often portrayed as “typical New York” in American television and film.

Brooklyn also hosts the world-renowned Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and the second largest public art collection in the United States, housed in the Brooklyn Museum.
