The Bronx the only borough that is located primarily on the mainland and not part of an island. Its population estimate as of 2013 was approximately 1,418,733 and it covers a land area 42 square miles. Although it is one of the most densely populated areas in the county, one-quarter of its land area is given over to park land and that amounts to some 7,000 acres. These areas include Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo.

During the 20th century, the Bronx’s history could be divided into four distinct periods: a boom period during 1900–29, the saw a huge population growth from 200,000 to 1.3 million. The Great Depression and post World War II years saw a slowing of this growth and the start of an eventual decline.
The mid to late century were hard times, as the Bronx declined from 1950 to about 1985 from a predominantly moderate-income to a predominantly lower-income area with high rates of violent crime and poverty. The Bronx has experienced an economic and developmental resurgence starting in the late 1980s that continues into today.
The Bronx got is name from Jonas Bronck, who created the first settlement as part of the New Netherland colony in 1639. First the Bronx River was given his name and eventually to the entire borough. In the mid 1800’s, the Bronx started receiving many Irish, German, Jewish and Italian immigrants as its once-rural population exploded until the mid-20th century.
They were succeeded after 1945 by African Americans and Hispanic Americans from the Caribbean basin — especially Puerto Rico and later the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. In recent years, this cultural mix has made the Bronx a wellspring of both Latin music and hip hop.
